Ghana’s domestic tourism sector is receiving a major boost as Accra By Night, launched in April 2025, reports strong patronage with more than 740 passengers recorded in just eight months. The initiative, operated aboard a double-decker open-top bus, has quickly become a highlight of the country’s December tourism calendar and a key element of the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda. The programme is sponsored by Twellium.
Initially scheduled as a monthly experience, overwhelming demand pushed organisers to expand the offering to multiple weekly tours in December. The tours feature cultural storytelling, heritage stops, food experiences, nightlife attractions and support for small local businesses.
“Accra By Night is more than a tour. It is a cultural celebration of who we are as Ghanaians when the sun goes down,” said Felicity Nelson, Deputy CEO of Operations at the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC).
Nelson added: “In just eight months, more than 740 people have joined the bus, and every single ride tells a story about Accra’s vibrancy and Ghana’s confidence.”
GTDC Outlines Mandate to Drive Tourism Investment
GTDC says the strong performance of Accra By Night underscores the state enterprise’s broader mandate to mobilise investment, support SMEs and build commercially viable tourism assets across Ghana.
“GTDC’s mandate is clear. We invest, we support and we build Ghana’s tourism future with intention and discipline,” Nelson noted, emphasising that the organisation is positioned as the government’s vehicle for profitable and sustainable tourism ventures.
As part of its core operations, GTDC seeks to:
-
mobilise investment into tourism ventures,
-
develop joint partnerships locally and internationally,
-
support tourism SMEs with financial and technical assistance, and
-
pursue commercial initiatives that enhance national tourism infrastructure.
GTM Expands as Ghana’s National Digital Tourism Marketplace
The Ghana Tourism Marketplace (GTM), a digital platform connecting hotels, tour operators, artisans, destinations and service providers, continues to scale with 50 vendors, 240 users, and over GH₵20,000 in processed transactions to date.
The platform enhances vendor visibility, bookings, secure digital payments and tourism data collection, while also supporting national destination marketing efforts.
“GTM is the digital heartbeat of Ghana’s tourism industry and a smart gateway for global travellers,” said Prof. Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTM.
He added: “With GTM, we are building a digital economy around tourism that is transparent, efficient and globally competitive.”
GTIP Positions Ghana as a Hub for Tourism Investment
The Ghana Tourism Investment Platform (GTIP) is emerging as a central interface for investors seeking heritage, eco-tourism, adventure and hospitality opportunities across the country. The platform currently features 10 investment-ready sites supported by national partnerships including the Ghana Tourism Authority, GIPC, National Investment Bank, Development Bank Ghana and the Forestry Commission.
GTIP provides investment briefs, maps, videos, photos and regulatory support to guide investors toward viable opportunities.
“GTIP represents possibility and progress because it reflects the Ghana we are building, not the Ghana we inherited,” said Naomi Borley Alabi, Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration at GTDC.
“We are creating a structured and transparent path for investment that honours our heritage and supports communities.”
