Despite gospel artistes securing four out of the six slots in this year’s VGMA Songwriter of the Year category, Kwesi Ernest, CEO of Media Excel said he is not satisfied with it.
The Songwriter of the Year has gospel artistes, Piesie Esther, Diana Hamilton, Ewurabena and Perez Musik, and Fameye and Black Sherif as contenders.
“If you look at our calendar year, Gospel music is supposed to win Songwriter of the Year because when you talk about songs that people want to hear and be inspired it is Gospel, in times of agony and distress people want to hear Gospel.
“And for the year 2022 /2023, we have had some very creative pieces of songs from the Gospel fraternity so I was not surprised at the number of categories for Gospel music this year, I was even hoping for more,’’ he said
It seems this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) ultimate award, Artiste of the Year, is a done deal for Gospel act Piesie Esther.
Kwesi Ernest was not only emphatic about her win but also stated without hesitation that the year under review was no doubt a good one for Piesie Esther.
“As for this year, the Artiste of the Year is a straight fight between Piesie Esther and Black Sherif but I am rooting for Piesie Esther. These two artistes made Ghana proud if you look at the work they put into their craft from Accra to Kumasi to Canada to New York, just name it, they were everywhere.”
Kwesi Ernest concluded that Piesie Esther who has seven nominations this year has a very good chance of winning the ultimate.
“The two of them have been very dominant, Piesie Esther for instance was even on secular platforms. What this means for us in the Gospel fraternity is that the same support we gave to Joe Mettle and Diana Hamilton, we are giving to Piesie Esther and probably even more because we want her to be this year’s VGMA Artiste of the Year which is very possible,” he stated.
