169 Ghanaians deported from the US to Ghana since January 2025 – Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that 169 Ghanaians have been deported from the United States to Ghana since the start of 2025.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Ablakwa said that currently, 120 Ghanaians are awaiting final decisions by US immigration authorities regarding their deportation.

“Since January 2025, 169 Ghanaians have returned to Ghana; 90 arrived unaccompanied on commercial flights, while 66 came on chartered control flights supervised by ICE agents,” the Minister informed MPs.

He added that 388 Ghanaians have been held in detention on immigration-related matters during the same period. Of these, 120 await decisions from the Board of Immigration Appeals, while 49 have exhausted all legal avenues and await deportation arrangements.

Commenting on the treatment of deportees, Ablakwa stated that there has been no evidence of human rights violations based on engagements with those returning to Ghana.

Regarding support from the US, he confirmed that Ghana has not requested any monetary or material assistance for accepting these deportees, stressing that the cooperation is purely humanitarian.
