GMA warns Govt over unpaid NHIA debts

President of GMA, Dr Frank Ankobea

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has released a statement cautioning government over the possible return of the defunct cash and carry system at the various health facilities nationwide, if the latter reneged on its quest to settle debts owed hospitals and clinics in order to foil the return of “cash and carry system. In a statement signed by the President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobea, they explained that, there are dire Consequences if urgent steps are not deployed to curtail the situation.

This revelation is in sharp contrast to pronouncement made by President Nana Addo during the 2020 state of the Nations Address on thursday (20/02/2020) that an allocation to a tune of about Gh¢1.2b have been earmarked for unpaid health Insurances claims in the country.

The move by the GMA, has become necessitated due to the overwhelming backblocks of debts owed hospitals and clinics who transacts business with the National health Insurances Authority.

A recent statistics released by the NHIA shows an astronomical increase of subscribers on the NHIA platform, which makes it Herculean for authorities within the health sector, to promptly pay for credits in the various hospitals.

Some health facilities in the country recently hinted that, should the governments fails to pay the claims owed them, they would have no choice than to turn away patients who patronize or seek medical care via the use of the health insurance card.

However, despite several calls on the Akufo Addo led government to service accumulated debts owed the embattled health installations by managements operating these facilities, the mother umbrella, which is the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a memo to government, imploring the Ministry of health, as well as the Ghana health service, to release the necessary funds needed to pay hospitals it have contracted under the National Health Instance Authority.
