Jamestown Fishermen Threaten Protest Over Non-Operational Cold Store

Fishermen at the Jamestown Fishing Harbour in Accra are threatening to stage a protest over the continued non-operation of a cold storage facility, which they say is undermining their ability to preserve their catch and protect their livelihoods.

The concerns come at a time when fishermen are recording bumper harvests but struggling to store the large quantities of fish landed, resulting in significant post-harvest losses.

According to the fishermen, the absence of a functioning cold storage facility leaves them with limited options for preserving their catch, forcing some to sell their fish at reduced prices to avoid spoilage, while others risk losing substantial portions of their earnings.

They say the situation is particularly frustrating given the potential of the facility to improve fish preservation, reduce waste and enhance their income.

The prolonged delay in operationalising the cold store has heightened tensions among the fishing community, with some fishermen warning that they may take to the streets if the situation remains unresolved.

The fishermen are therefore calling for urgent action to ensure the facility becomes operational, stressing that access to reliable cold storage is critical to reducing post-harvest losses and improving their economic prospects.
