ACCRA, Ghana, 13th October: President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Ghana Police Service for what he described as improvements in the country’s security situation, citing a reduction in unresolved murder cases and increased confidence among commercial drivers travelling at night.
The President praised Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the police administration for their efforts in combating crime and improving public safety.
Speaking at the commissioning of an 85-bed block at the Police Hospital, President Mahama said the country is safer than it had been previously.
To illustrate the improvement, the President recounted the experience of a bus driver who told him that commercial vehicles previously had to queue before embarking on journeys because of fears of highway robbery.
According to the President, the driver indicated that the situation had improved to the extent that buses now departed as soon as they were full, even at 2 a.m., because drivers felt safer using the roads.
President Mahama also pointed to a reduction in unresolved murder cases, commending the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Police Intelligence Department and the Police Cyber Unit for their contributions.
He expressed gratitude to officers for their service and urged them to sustain their efforts in maintaining law and order.
“As Commander-in-Chief and President of the Republic, I want to express the gratitude of our nation to all of you and urge you to keep up the good work,” he said.
The President further assured the Police Service of the government’s continued support, particularly in the provision of logistics required to improve operational effectiveness.
He said the government’s commitment to strengthening the Service included the provision of armoured vehicles and body armour to improve the protection of officers during operations.
President Mahama also announced plans to allocate GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 new police apartments to address congestion in some barracks.
The President’s remarks formed part of his address at the commissioning of the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex, an 85-bed facility intended to improve healthcare delivery for police personnel and the general public.
