TEMA, Ghana, 19th September: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has questioned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) bid to return to power, arguing that the party must first address accountability concerns surrounding its previous administration.
According to him, the NPP has no moral right to seek another mandate from Ghanaians when a former Finance Minister under its administration, Ken Ofori-Atta, remains embroiled in ongoing legal proceedings.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Mr Koomson said the circumstances surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s absence from Ghana and other ongoing legal proceedings raise questions about the NPP’s readiness to return to government.
Mr Koomson specifically challenged the NPP to ensure that the former Finance Minister returns to Ghana to face due process and account for his tenure in office.
“They should tell Ofori-Atta to come back home. The man who handled our finances has run away. You are not bringing the man back home but you want to come back to power again to loot,” he said.
Mr Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in April 2026.
However, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) says he remains subject to an active extradition process and faces 28 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences in Ghana.
Mr Koomson maintained that until the NPP persuades the former Finance Minister to return to Ghana and face the relevant legal processes, the party should not be thinking about campaigning to regain political power.
He went further to suggest that legal action could be taken to restrain the NPP from campaigning if the party fails to address the issue.
“Not until they persuade him (Ofori-Atta) to come back home that, ‘Oh, you come and let’s see what they will do to you and we are there for you in any case,’ somebody should go to court to refrain the NPP from campaigning,” he stated.
The GFL Secretary-General acknowledged that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could make mistakes in the course of governing but argued that this should not, in his view, translate into a return of the NPP to power.
He said if Ghanaians were faced with the choice of returning the NPP to power or supporting the Union Government proposed by fellow panellist and political activist Akwasi Addae Odike, he would prefer the latter.
“NDC might be making mistakes, but Ghanaians shouldn’t bring NPP to power. And for the NPP to come back to power, then Odike rather should win,” he said.
Mr Koomson also urged the NDC to remain focused on its governing agenda, resist what he described as propaganda from the opposition, and strengthen its grassroots structures.
