The Director of Communications of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has predicted a difficult political future for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that it could struggle to secure even 18% of the vote in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem programme on 18 August 2026 in Accra, Mr. Owusu said the NPP’s recent internal elections failed to generate the level of public attention normally associated with the party.
According to him, the NPP’s elections were overshadowed by the popularity of the KFC promotion, which he said attracted more public discussion than the party’s internal electoral process.
Mr. Owusu argued that the situation demonstrates what he described as the NPP’s declining relevance in Ghana’s current political discourse.
He noted that, apart from Greater Accra, there had been limited public discussion about the NPP elections in other parts of the country.
Turning his attention to the Ashanti Region, Mr. Owusu said the political dynamics could change significantly because former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is not contesting.
He suggested that the absence of Wontumi could pave the way for new political faces and potentially reshape the NPP’s internal structures in the region.
Mr. Owusu maintained that the road to the 2028 general elections would therefore be extremely difficult for the NPP, insisting that the party would have to work hard to regain public relevance.
His comments were made during an interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem in Accra.
