The Ghana Police Service has intercepted 1,054 vehicles in the Greater Accra Region as part of an ongoing nationwide road traffic enforcement exercise targeting the unauthorised use of sirens, horns, strobe lights, beacon lights and other illegal vehicle modifications.
The exercise, being conducted across the country, is aimed at enforcing Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations and addressing the growing use of unauthorised emergency warning devices by motorists. The Police say such devices can create confusion on the roads, undermine the privileges reserved for authorised emergency vehicles and pose risks to other road users.
As part of the operation, officers have been conducting checks on vehicles and taking action against motorists found to be using or installing devices that are not authorised under the law. Drivers whose vehicles were found to have violated the regulations were educated on the relevant provisions of the road traffic laws.
The Police also removed and seized unauthorised sirens, beacon lights, strobe lights, horns and other illegal vehicle modifications discovered during the exercise. The seized items have been retained for further investigations and appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Ghana Police Service disclosed that since the nationwide enforcement exercise began on June 15, 2026, a total of 4,627 vehicles have been intercepted across the country for various traffic-related offences linked to unauthorised warning devices and unlawful vehicle modifications.
Greater Accra recorded the highest number of interceptions, with 1,054 vehicles stopped during the enforcement exercise, highlighting the scale of the problem in the region and the need for continued monitoring and enforcement.
The Police Service said the exercise forms part of broader efforts to promote discipline among motorists, ensure equal compliance with road traffic laws and improve safety on Ghana’s roads.
The nationwide campaign will continue in all regions, with the Police urging motorists to remove unauthorised sirens, beacon lights, strobe lights and other prohibited modifications from their vehicles.
The Service has warned that motorists who continue to install or use such devices in violation of the Road Traffic Regulations will be subject to the appropriate legal sanctions.
