The Ghana Police Service says the Accra Circuit Court has convicted and sentenced 43-year-old Camila Alhassan to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour for offensive conduct following the publication of abusive content on social media targeting President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama.
In a press release dated 17 July 2026, the Police said Alhassan was arrested on July 9, 2026, through an intelligence-led operation after the Service intercepted a TikTok video in which she allegedly made offensive, insulting and derogatory remarks against the President and the First Lady.
The Police alleged that the video also contained threats against their lives and false allegations concerning the President’s private life, which it said were capable of disturbing public peace and undermining national cohesion.
According to the Service, Alhassan was subsequently charged with offensive conduct and false communication and brought before the Accra Circuit Court. Sentencing was initially deferred after she claimed to be pregnant, but a medical examination at the Police Hospital confirmed that she was not pregnant.
The Court sentenced her to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour on July 16, 2026.
The Ghana Police Service further disclosed that it is taking steps to arraign Alhassan before the High Court on a separate charge of false communication under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
The Police reminded the public that although the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the right must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. The Service warned that social media must not be used to spread falsehoods, issue threats or publish unlawful content, stressing that anyone who engages in criminal conduct online will face the full rigour of the law.
