President Mahama Inspects Ohiaba CHPS Compound, Presents Free Healthcare Kits During Central Region Tour

OHIABA, Ghana, 26th July: President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, June 26, 2026, inspected the newly constructed Ohiaba CHPS Compound and presented free healthcare kits to the facility in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region.

The visit formed part of the President’s two-day #ResettingGhana Tour of the Central Region, during which he is inspecting development projects and engaging communities on his government’s development agenda.

Addressing residents and health workers, President Mahama explained that his administration’s decision to require every Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) to construct two new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds annually is aimed at improving access to healthcare, particularly for people living in rural and underserved communities.

According to him, the initiative is designed to bring healthcare services closer to citizens who may not have access to medical insurance or healthcare facilities within their communities.

“How do we help our people in the rural areas who are not under medical insurance? The first thing we did was to direct every district assembly to build two new CHPS compounds every year. With 261 district assemblies across the country, you can imagine the number of CHPS compounds that would be built over a four-year period,” President Mahama stated.

The President noted that the expansion of CHPS compounds across the country forms the foundation of government’s Free Primary Healthcare Programme, which seeks to ensure that every Ghanaian has access to essential healthcare services regardless of their location or financial status.

He revealed that the Ohiaba CHPS Compound is one of the facilities constructed under the initiative by the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District Assembly.

“We are going to post our daughters and sons who have completed nursing and physician assistant training to serve in these CHPS compounds. On the basis of that, we have launched our Free Primary Healthcare Programme. This Ohiaba CHPS Compound is one of the facilities built by the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District Assembly,” he said.

President Mahama further commended the Member of Parliament for the area and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, for supporting the facility with essential medical equipment to ensure its effective operation.

According to the President, the compound has been fully equipped with beds, a delivery bed, consultation rooms, blood pressure monitoring devices, and equipment for basic medical testing and diagnosis.

“The Minister was kind enough to provide all the necessary equipment for the CHPS compound. It now has beds, a delivery bed, a consulting room, blood pressure monitoring equipment, and facilities for various medical tests. Indeed, when we visited the delivery room, the Queen Mother jokingly remarked that the quality of the delivery bed was making her consider having another child,” he said, drawing laughter from the gathering.

The President emphasized that strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure remains a key component of his administration’s broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery and ensure that quality medical services are accessible to all Ghanaians, particularly those in rural communities.

President Mahama is undertaking a two-day #ResettingGhana Tour of the Central Region from Friday, June 26, to Saturday, June 27, 2026. The tour is expected to see him inspect ongoing development projects, engage local communities, and outline his government’s development priorities for the region.
