Residents of Tema Community 5, particularly those living in the Church Village area, as well as parts of Communities 3 and the Railway area, are once again grappling with the effects of severe flooding following recent heavy rains, with several homes and properties affected.
In response to the situation, the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for the Tema West Municipal Assembly, Mr. Kwaku Nana Tatantu, visited the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage and interact with victims. During the visit, he expressed sympathy to residents and assured them of NADMO’s commitment to supporting their recovery efforts.
According to Mr. Tatantu, flooding in these areas is not a new phenomenon. He explained that the municipality serves as a natural collection basin for rainwater flowing from areas including Madina and the Akuapem mountain range before it is gradually discharged into the sea. This geographical situation has made parts of Tema particularly vulnerable to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting above-normal rainfall this season, Mr. Tatantu urged residents to remain cautious and prioritize their safety. He advised community members not to enter floodwaters to retrieve personal belongings, warning that the water may be contaminated by sewage and waste materials from surrounding communities, posing serious health risks.

He announced that the organisation would provide relief items, including mattresses, mosquito nets, rice, vegetable oil, and other essential supplies to assist families displaced or affected by the floods. He further encouraged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season and adhere to safety guidelines aimed at reducing the impact of flooding.
The latest flooding incident has once again renewed concerns about the recurring challenges faced by residents in Tema Communities 3, 5 and the Railway area, with many calling for long-term drainage improvements and flood-control measures to address the problem permanently.
