The Inspector General of Police has issued a directive to all regional and district police commanders across Ghana, instructing them to assign two armed police officers to escort every Ghana Premier League club operating within their respective areas of command.
This decisive measure comes in the wake of a tragic incident in which 20-year-old Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong was shot dead during a highway armed robbery attack. The young winger lost his life while the team was returning late at night from their Match Day 29 fixture, a 1-0 defeat away to Samartex in Samreboi.
Armed robbers reportedly blocked the road, opened fire on the team bus, and forced players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety; Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead at a hospital despite efforts to save him.
The shocking event has sent ripples of grief through the Ghanaian football community and prompted urgent calls for enhanced security to protect clubs and players during long-distance travels, especially after dark.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, while the Ghana Football Association has also vowed to review and strengthen overall security protocols for domestic league matches to prevent any recurrence of such heartbreaking violence.
