Maxwell Konadu advises Kotoko: Character must guide coaching search

Former Asante Kotoko head coach Maxwell Konadu has called on the club’s hierarchy to place strong emphasis on personality, resilience, and mental strength as they move to appoint a substantive head coach.

The Porcupine Warriors are currently without a permanent manager following the exit of Karim Zito, whose departure came after a run of results that heightened pressure on the technical bench.

Assistant coach Nana Yaw Owusu has stepped in as interim coach while management begins the process of identifying a long-term replacement.

Speculation continues to swirl around potential candidates, with discussions largely focused on securing an experienced tactician capable of restoring belief and returning the Kumasi-based side to the hunt for major honours.

Konadu, however, argues that experience and tactical pedigree alone should not dictate the club’s decision, stressing that the demands of managing Ghana’s elite clubs extend far beyond technical expertise.

“It is about finding the right fit,” Konadu explained. “At clubs like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, you need coaches with character — individuals who can withstand pressure, manage expectations, and handle the intensity of the fanbase. Patience is key, but it is equally important to make the right choice.”

Kotoko currently sit fourth on the league table with 38 points, trailing leaders Medeama by seven points after 23 matches.
