Winfried Schäfer determined to steer Black Stars back to Africa’s elite

Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schäfer has reaffirmed his commitment to helping Ghana reclaim its place among Africa’s football powerhouses.

The experienced German tactician was appointed following Ghana’s failure to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco — a setback that prompted a restructuring of the team’s technical direction.

Since taking up the advisory role, Schäfer has played a key part in Ghana’s resurgence, with the Black Stars successfully booking their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Medeama FM, Schäfer disclosed how discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) led to his appointment.

“After the Black Stars failed to qualify for AFCON 2025, the GFA President met me and asked me to join the team as a technical advisor to help Ghana qualify for the World Cup,” Schäfer revealed.

The former Cameroon coach expressed both pride and ambition as he reflected on his role with the national team.

“I’m happy about this opportunity. Ghana is a big name — the heart of Africa — and I want to help the team reclaim its number one position,” he added.

Schäfer’s focus now shifts to long-term development, as Ghana prepares to compete on the global stage.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in March for high-profile international friendlies against Austria and Germany, fixtures designed to fine-tune the squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
