Obiri Boahen Warns Against Marginalising Party After Gaining Power

There is a growing need for all political parties to build healthy internal political relationships, as the very structure that works hard to win political power often loses its relevance once power is attained. In many cases, flagbearers who ride on the strength of their parties to win elections go on to ignore the role of the party in governance after assuming office.

Historically, Ghana’s two leading political parties have both suffered from this internal division. The tendency to sideline the party in governance and appointments has often created confusion, as presidential preferences override the established role of the party in decision-making.

The former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, made these remarks on Adekyee Mu Nsem, a morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.

According to him, the upcoming NPP flagbearer contest scheduled for January 31 poses little uncertainty, as he is highly optimistic that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge as the party’s next flagbearer.

He further cautioned all contenders to be circumspect in their statements during the contest, stressing that the party must remain united and work together as a formidable force toward the 2028 general elections.

Although there may be tendencies for breakaways following internal contests, Nana Obiri Boahen noted that such developments are not new. He emphasized that individuals who truly share the vision and agenda of the party usually remain committed to its interests.

In a related development, former Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to vote for presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the party’s primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31.

Describing him as courageous and trustworthy, she said the former Assin Central Member of Parliament possesses the qualities Ghana needs in its next leader.

Addressing NPP delegates during a campaign tour of the Atebubu/Amantin Constituency in the Bono East Region, Naa Torshie Addo stated that the party’s next flagbearer must be compassionate, firm, and true to his word, adding that Kennedy Agyapong best fits that profile.

“The NPP needs a leader with a kind heart—a man of valor and courage. Ghana also needs a businessman as President to transform our lives. Mr. Agyapong fits these qualities, as his philanthropic work and unquestionable reputation are clear for all to see,” she said.

She added that the NPP must prioritize leadership founded on integrity, hard work, and popular appeal if it hopes to regain political power in the 2028 general elections.

“The majority of Ghanaian voters now support Kennedy Agyapong,” she added.

Naa Torshie Addo expressed confidence that the NPP would win the 2028 elections under Mr. Agyapong’s leadership and urged delegates to vote for him in the supreme interest of the party and the country.
