The Management of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has announced that 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses have been repaired and deployed on major routes across Accra as part of efforts to improve public transportation and ease congestion in the capital.
The development brings the total number of operational Aayalolo buses serving passengers across the Greater Accra Region to 128, according to GAPTE.
The Managing Director of GAPTE, Awudu Dawuda, disclosed this when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal.
The visit formed part of efforts to assess the operations of the Aayalolo bus service and explore measures to improve public transportation and make the system more efficient for commuters.
Dawuda explained that increasing the number of operational buses had been a key priority for GAPTE, particularly in light of the need to improve mobility and help address persistent traffic congestion in the Greater Accra Region.
He said the organisation inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently undertook repairs on 48 additional buses to increase the number of vehicles available for deployment on its various routes.
“The 80 buses that we inherited – the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra region – and so we had to repair over 48 buses and these buses have been added to the 80 buses and so we currently have 128 in our corridors. If I say corridors, I am talking about the routes we are on.”
