President John Dramani Mahama says the government’s 24-Hour Market programme is designed to stimulate economic activity and create modern trading spaces for communities across the country.
He said markets remain the “lifeblood” of trade and local economic development, making their construction and modernisation an important component of the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda.
President Mahama made the remarks when he inspected the ongoing Poyetanga 24-Hour Economy Market during the second day of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.
According to him, the strategic location of the district means the completed market has the potential to attract traders and customers from several surrounding communities, thereby expanding economic opportunities in the area.
“We want every district to have a decent and modern place where people can do business and where farmers can bring their produce to sell,” he said.
The President commended the contractor working on the Poyetanga project, noting that construction had encountered setbacks due to the clayey nature of the ground.
He explained that additional time had been required to stabilise the foundation before construction could continue, but expressed satisfaction that the contractor was now catching up and making good progress.
President Mahama said the government was implementing the 24-Hour Market programme across the country as part of efforts to decentralise economic opportunities and strengthen local economies.
He added that every Assembly is also expected to use part of its Common Fund allocation to complete abandoned projects in its district as legacy projects.
The President said the visible progress of development projects in many districts was a source of hope and satisfaction for local residents and commended DCEs and MCEs who were delivering on their responsibilities.
