GFA launches FIFA U15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially launched the maiden edition of the FIFA U15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues, marking a significant milestone in the development of women’s football at the grassroots level in the country.

The launch ceremony took place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the GFA Conference Room in Accra, signaling the start of a structured, competitive platform specifically designed for young female players under the age of 15.

Backed by FIFA, this initiative aims to nurture emerging talent across Ghana’s regions by providing early exposure to organized competition, skill development, and a clear pathway for progression in the women’s game.

The leagues focus on building a strong foundation for girls’ football, encouraging wider participation, and addressing the need for age-appropriate platforms where young players can thrive without having to compete prematurely in senior or older-age categories.

In many cases, talented girls under 17 have previously been forced into higher-level leagues, and this new structure offers them a more suitable environment to grow their abilities. GFA President Kurt Okraku described the launch as a defining moment and a major milestone for women’s football development in Ghana.

He emphasized its role in transforming the future of the sport by investing in youth, particularly at the regional level, to create a sustainable talent pipeline. To support the successful rollout, the GFA has committed financial backing, including an announcement of ₵80,000 in support for each Regional Football Association to help with logistics, organization, and implementation.

The regional format ensures that competitions take place locally, making participation more accessible for clubs, schools, and communities nationwide while fostering healthy rivalries and talent identification at the grassroots.

This move aligns with broader efforts to grow women’s football in Africa and globally, with the potential to feed into national youth teams and ultimately strengthen the senior Black Queens setup in the years ahead.
