1.3m unemployed youth a national security threat – Opare Addo

Youth unemployment has escalated into a critical national security risk, warns George Opare Addo, Ghana’s Minister for Youth Development and Employment. He called for urgent collective action to tackle the crisis.

In a Thursday interview , Opare Addo labelled the situation “alarming” and a top priority for all Ghanaians. “The number of unemployed people is a scary situation. It is a big national security threat, and all of us must be worried about the rising trend of youth unemployment,” he stated. The government, he added, is implementing measures to sharply reduce these figures.

The warning aligns with fresh Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) data from Q3 2025, revealing over 1.3 million Ghanaians aged 15-24, 21.5% of that group neither in education, employment, nor training. This highlights intensifying labour market strains and skills shortages.

Opare Addo reassured the public that authorities are ramping up initiatives to reintegrate youth into productive roles, bolstering national stability.
