Nigerian actor Yul Edochie has opened up about the early struggles of his acting career, revealing that he earned just 5,000 naira per movie when he first entered Nollywood in 2005.
Sharing his journey, the actor recalled how some of the industry’s biggest stars were already earning as much as one million naira for a single movie role while he was still trying to establish himself.
Despite the huge difference in earnings, Yul said he never allowed envy to distract him from his goals. Instead, he used the situation as motivation to improve his craft.
According to him, he constantly asked himself what the top actors were doing differently to command such impressive fees. Determined to find the answer, he began studying the performances of some of Nollywood’s most respected stars.
The actor named legendary performers including Ramsey Nouah, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and his father, Olu Jacobs, among those he closely observed. Rather than focusing on their wealth and success, Yul said he concentrated on learning from their dedication, professionalism, and acting abilities.
“I was not chasing their cars. I was chasing their depth, their commitment, their grace in front of the camera,” he explained.
Yul Edochie believes that true success comes from continuously improving one’s value and skills. He noted that once a person becomes valuable in their field, financial rewards will eventually follow.
Today, Yul Edochie is regarded as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, proving that persistence, hard work, and self-development can pave the way to success.
