Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the NDC is the better manager of Ghana’s economy.
He criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was chosen as the running mate for then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo due to his supposed economic expertise, for failing to stabilize the local currency against major international currencies.
Dennis Miracles, spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, has claimed that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) outperforms the NDC in every aspect. Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo dismissed this claim as a “miraculous statement,” playing on Dennis Miracles’ name.
“Not surprised he is called Miracles because what he is saying is miraculous,” Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo said on Metro TV’s “Good Afternoon Ghana” show. “An economic person, someone whom the president said was appointed to turn the economy around, took the dollar from 4 GHS to 16 GHS. You call that a challenge, but when John Mahama managed it at 4 GHS, you call it mismanagement. No wonder he is called Miracles, because you must be called Miracles to justify this.”
Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo also dismissed the notion that Dr. Bawumia has unique ideas to govern the country, suggesting that Bawumia has been sidelined in the current administration, likening him to a “driver’s mate.”
“If the driver’s mate is as good as he claims, then why is it that whenever the driver is sick, a spare driver is called instead of the driver’s mate?” Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo asked. “That tells you how inexperienced the driver’s mate is to be trusted with the steering wheel.”
He criticized the NPP for questioning what John Mahama would do if he returned to the presidency, calling it disrespectful.
Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo highlighted the NDC’s track record of development and stated that John Mahama would continue from where he left off before losing power in 2016.
Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo believes that John Mahama will significantly improve critical sectors such as agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and social safety nets while working to restore the economy.
He emphasized that John Mahama has the experience and capability to turn the country’s economy around and should be given the nod in the upcoming December polls.
