Yaw Dabo: YouTube Outshines CD Sales in Profit and Transparency

Ghanaian actor Yaw Dabo has asserted that YouTube is a far more profitable and transparent platform for content creators than the traditional sale of CDs.

Speaking in an interview with blogger Zionfelix, Dabo emphasized the numerous benefits YouTube offers creatives, particularly its ability to ensure fair compensation and direct access to audiences.

According to Dabo, the era of relying on CD distributors often left actors and producers shortchanged, as they had limited control over sales data and revenue. “Back then, you had no idea how many CDs were sold or how much you were really earning,” he said. “YouTube has changed everything—it’s transparent, and you get paid based on views.”

The actor also pointed out that YouTube allows for real-time tracking of content performance and income, eliminating the guesswork and middlemen that once plagued the local movie industry. He added that many Ghanaian actors now earn significant sums through YouTube, thanks to well-paying production deals.

Dabo’s stance counters that of veteran actor Akrobeto, who previously blamed digital platforms for contributing to the decline of Ghana’s Kumawood film industry. However, Dabo argued that digital migration isn’t the issue; rather, it’s the unwillingness of some industry players to adapt. “Those who’ve embraced the digital age are doing well—some are earning more now than during the CD era,” he said.

His comments sparked a wave of online reactions. One user wrote, “Low-key Dabo is an intelligent speaker 💯,” while another praised him for “saying everything on point.” Despite mixed opinions within the industry, Dabo remains confident that the future of Ghanaian film lies in digital platforms like YouTube.
