On the evening of Wednesday ahead of Ghana’s critical World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Madagascar, President John Dramani Mahama delivered a stirring address to the Black Stars at their training camp at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The visit, which took place amidst heightened anticipation, aimed to galvanize the national football team following a challenging period marked by their underwhelming performance at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The president’s speech blended encouragement with a clear call to action, underscoring the stakes for both the team and the nation.
Standing before the squad, which included seasoned captain Jordan Ayew, the technical team and the management team, President Mahama spoke with a tone that balanced optimism and urgency.
“If you win these two games, I’m sure Ghanaians will be ready to put the disappointment of the Afcon behind them and rally behind you,” he declared, his words resonating with the players and coaching staff alike.
The 2025AFCON campaign had ended in frustration for Ghana, with early elimination sparking widespread criticism from fans and pundits. The president’s remarks acknowledged this lingering discontent while framing the qualifiers as a pivotal opportunity for redemption.
Mahama, a known football enthusiast, highlighted the team’s historical resilience, recalling past triumphs that had united the country. “You’ve shown the world before what the Black Stars are made of—grit, skill, and an unbreakable spirit,” he said.
“These matches are your chance to remind everyone why Ghana remains a powerhouse in African football.” His address came at a strategic moment, with the first qualifier against Chad scheduled on Friday, March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium followed by a clash with Madagascar who just won their fifth game in the series against Central Africa Republic 4-1 today four days later.
Football in Ghana is a unifying force, and the Black Stars’ success—or lack thereof—often reverberates beyond the pitch, influencing national morale. Mahama’s administration, keenly aware of this dynamic, has prioritized support for the team, including improved training facilities and logistical backing for the qualifiers.
The president’s presence was intended to boost player confidence and signal governmental commitment ahead of the 2026 World Cup campaign.
The match has been scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2025 at 19:00GMT.
