A worker of a private reforestation company has sustained serious gunshot injuries following an alleged attack by suspected illegal chainsaw operators in the Abesewa Forest Reserve in the Ahafo Ano South East District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 25, 2026, when a team from Next Door Farms, a company contracted by the Forestry Commission to undertake tree planting activities in the reserve, entered the forest to confront suspected illegal loggers allegedly destroying newly planted trees.
According to sources, the suspected illegal operators opened fire on the team as they approached the area. One of the workers sustained severe gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Tepa Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Following the incident, security personnel reportedly arrested two suspects believed to be linked to the illegal logging group. The suspects are currently being held at the Tepa Divisional Police Station as preliminary investigations continue.
Company executives Moses Oppong and Nana Gyamfi have confirmed the incident and called for swift justice. They are also urging law enforcement authorities to intensify efforts to apprehend other members of the alleged illegal logging syndicate.
The incident has renewed concerns about the growing threat posed by illegal logging activities to forest protection efforts and the safety of individuals involved in reforestation and conservation initiatives.
