Woodgate slams Tottenham duo Emerson and Reguilon

Jonathan Woodgate has taken aim at Tottenham Hotspur duo Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal on BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage, as Spurs suffered a 3-2 defeat to Southampton at home on Wednesday night.

Spurs led twice against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side against the Saints, going 1-0 up and then 2-1 – Son Heung-min restoring the lead on 70 minutes. But two late goals from Mo Elyounoussi and Che Adams saw Spurs lose 3-2.

While Tottenham were poor, Southampton – and namely, James Ward-Prowse – was excellent. The Saints took advantage of Tottenham’s defensive issues being worsened by the absence of Eric Dier.

Ex-Tottenham defender Woodgate spoke after the match about Southampton’s win – and said the positions of Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong confused both Reguilon and Emerson during the 90 minutes.

“The positions Elyounoussi and Armstrong were picking up, they were like no.10’s. Emerson Royal and Reguilon, they didn’t know what to do. The Spurs couldn’t deal with it. Horrendous defending by Spurs,” Woodgate said.

Woodgate on Emerson, Reguilon: Tottenham need better at wing-backIt will not be news to Antonio Conte that his two wing-backs have made mistakes defensively. Reports in January suggested that Conte wanted to replace Brazil international Emerson in the January window.

While Reguilon is superb going forward, the Spaniard has struggled defensively. Even though he is operating with Ben Davies behind him, he still has defensive responsibility. It leaves Conte with a decision to make.

Bring in replacements for the ex-Madrid and Barcelona stars – or try to improve them on the training ground. Until the summer, he will be forced to do the latter as Spurs pursue a place in the top four.
