Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has called for reforms in Ghana’s prison system, proposing a dedicated hospital for inmates and the introduction of conjugal visits.
The proposals highlight concerns about prisoners’ welfare, access to healthcare and detention conditions, while renewing discussions about rehabilitation and the reintegration of inmates into society.
Chairman Wontumi’s proposed prison hospital is intended to address the healthcare needs of inmates, while conjugal visits would allow eligible prisoners to maintain intimate relationships with their spouses under regulated conditions.
The proposals also raise questions about the resources, infrastructure and security arrangements required to implement such measures within Ghana’s correctional facilities.
Any consideration of the proposals would require careful assessment by the relevant authorities, including the Ghana Prisons Service, to determine their feasibility and the legal and administrative changes that may be necessary.
The call adds to broader discussions about improving prison conditions, protecting inmates’ rights and strengthening rehabilitation programmes to support their successful return to society after serving their sentences.
