Award-winning Ghanaian musician Wiyaala has received national recognition after being unveiled as Ghana’s new Tourism Ambassador and officially crowned “Fugu Queen” by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in May 2026.
The announcement has been widely celebrated as more than just a ceremonial honor. For many Ghanaians, honour represents the inspiring journey of an artist who chose to stay connected to her roots while promoting Ghanaian culture on the global stage.
Unlike many entertainers who relocate to major cities or overseas in search of bigger opportunities, Wiyaala returned to her hometown of Funsi in the Upper West Region, where she has played a major role in transforming the community into a growing cultural and tourism destination.
Known for her energetic performances, traditional fashion, and strong advocacy for northern Ghanaian culture, Wiyaala has consistently used her music and image to promote African identity and local traditions.
Her signature use of fugu — the traditional smock associated with northern Ghana — has also become a major symbol of her brand, earning her the title “Fugu Queen.”
Over the years, the singer has gained international recognition through performances across Africa, Europe, and other parts of the world while remaining deeply connected to her heritage.
The Ministry’s decision to appoint her as Tourism Ambassador is being viewed by many as a strategic move to spotlight Ghana’s rich cultural diversity and encourage tourism beyond the major cities.
Fans, celebrities, and cultural advocates have since congratulated Wiyaala on social media, praising her for representing northern Ghana with pride and helping to place communities like Funsi on the global map.
