Wilson Arthur: Ghana needs a dedicated sports fund
FA Cup Chairman Wilson Arthur has taken a strong stance against the government’s approach to sports funding, insisting that Ghana’s sports sector is being undervalued and underfunded.
With Parliament recently approving GHS 65.9 million for the Ministry of Sports in 2025, Arthur believes the real issue is not the allocation but the absence of a long-term plan.
Speaking to Luv Sports, he made it clear that without a dedicated sports fund, the industry will continue to struggle.
“It’s either the government has an alternative funding plan, or they simply don’t value sports,” he said.
“Ghana needs a sports fund—one that ensures sustained investment. The government doesn’t even have to fund it directly; they just need to facilitate it.”
Arthur proposed a structured approach, including leveraging local talent and hosting high-profile fundraising events.
“If I were president, I’d hold an annual gala, bringing sports icons and corporate sponsors together.
Funds raised would support league players, national teams, and ensure Ghana benefits financially from player transfers abroad.”
