Who Is in Charge of MahamaCares? – Bereaved Abraham Koomson Questions as He Loses Son

TEMA, Ghana, 22nd August: Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to establish a strong monitoring structure to ensure that government appointees effectively implement his policies and programmes.

According to Mr. Koomson, some government appointees are more interested in the privileges and benefits that come with their positions than in diligently implementing the policies of the administration.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in an emotional account, Mr. Koomson disclosed the death of his 44-year-old son, who passed away at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema after a period of illness.

He said the high cost of his son’s medical treatment made him particularly interested in the government’s MahamaCares initiative, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), which was introduced to provide financial support for Ghanaians suffering from serious chronic and non-communicable diseases.

Mr. Koomson said he made efforts to have his son enrolled onto the programme to access the needed support, but those efforts did not materialise before his son eventually passed away.

MahamaCares is designed to provide financial assistance and specialised care to patients suffering from critical conditions, including cancer, kidney failure, stroke and cardiovascular diseases, particularly where treatment costs exceed what is covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The bereaved labour leader questioned who is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the programme and ensuring that eligible patients can access the support intended for them.

“Who is in charge of MahamaCares?” Mr. Koomson asked, stressing the need for effective systems to ensure that government policies translate into tangible support for ordinary Ghanaians.

He urged President Mahama to strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms within his administration to ensure that ministers, chief executives and other appointees work in line with the President’s policies and priorities.

Mr. Koomson also expressed his appreciation to individuals who personally supported him financially during his son’s treatment, saying their assistance was invaluable to him and his family during the difficult period.
