During a campaign rally in Kpandai, former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, challenged President Akufo-Addo over his previous claims regarding Ghana’s wealth.
John Mahama recalled Akufo-Addo’s 2016 assertion that Ghana was “sitting on money” while its citizens faced hunger, a statement made during his campaign against then-President John Mahama, whom he accused of mismanaging state funds.
As part of a three-day tour of the Northern Region, Mr. Mahama posed a direct question to Akufo-Addo: “Where is the money you said Ghana has?” He emphasized that, unlike the five questions he directed at Vice President Bawumia the previous day, his inquiry to the president was singular and pointed.
John Mahama urged Ghanaians to be wary of the NPP’s promises, reminding them of past electoral deceptions.
“Don’t let anybody lie to you again,” he cautioned. “They lied to win power in 2016 and 2020, but we must not fall for it again in 2024, as they have nothing substantial to offer.”
The former president expressed confidence in the NDC’s chances in the upcoming elections, stating, “The NDC will win the December elections decisively, and there will be no need for a runoff. Everything indicates that Ghanaians are ready for change.”
John Mahama’s rhetoric aimed not only to hold the current administration accountable but also to rally support for his campaign, tapping into growing discontent among the populace regarding the current government’s performance.
