TEMA, Ghana, 30th May: Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the government to provide practical alternatives and effective measures to address plastic pollution as Ghana moves towards banning styrofoam takeaway packs and other related products.
According to Mr. Koomson, while efforts to protect the environment are commendable, authorities must carefully consider the impact of the ban on the daily lives of Ghanaians and provide affordable alternatives before fully implementing the policy.
His comments follow the announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of a nationwide ban on styrofoam products, including takeaway packs, disposable cups, and other polystyrene foam items, effective January 1, 2027.
The move forms part of broader efforts to curb plastic pollution and improve environmental sanitation across the country.
The announcement stems from a policy declaration made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration on June 5, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling plastic waste and promoting environmental sustainability.
In a statement issued on May 25, the EPA explained that the directive is aimed at safeguarding public health, reducing plastic waste, improving sanitation, and advancing sustainable development goals.
Reacting to the development on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, May 30, Mr. Koomson questioned what alternatives would be available to consumers and businesses once the ban takes effect.
He noted that previous attempts to phase out certain packaging materials did not entirely solve the problem, stressing that simply banning products without introducing viable substitutes may create new challenges for citizens and businesses.
Mr. Koomson urged policymakers to engage stakeholders, including traders, manufacturers, food vendors, and consumers, to ensure a smooth transition to environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
He also used the opportunity to commend Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for what he described as her dedication and commitment to addressing environmental challenges in Ghana.
While supporting efforts to protect the environment, Mr. Koomson emphasized the need for practical and sustainable solutions that balance environmental protection with the realities of everyday life for Ghanaians.
