We’ve compromised quality for quantity – Legon lecturer on Free SHS.

Professor Martin Oteng Ababio, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has criticized the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, stating that it has worsened existing challenges in the education sector.

While acknowledging the increase in university enrollment due to the policy, he pointed out that the government has failed to enhance infrastructure in tertiary institutions.

During a campaign outreach for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, Prof. Ababio highlighted that although the Free SHS policy has benefited many, it has led to overcrowded lecture halls, with up to 800 students in a single classroom.

This situation compromises the quality of education, making it difficult for lecturers to engage with students effectively and manage grading workloads.

He commended the NDC’s proposal to review the policy, emphasizing the need for balance between access and quality in education.
