Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has expressed his approval of an invitation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to attend a critical presentation addressing significant discrepancies the party claims to have found in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) 2024 provisional voters’ register.
Mr. Koomson emphasized that workers across the country have endured immense hardship under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, and they are eager to explore how the NDC plans to challenge the status quo and offer relief to the working class.
He believes that the meeting with the NDC is crucial, as the suffering of workers under the NPP has created an urgent need for change.
The NDC has raised serious concerns regarding the accuracy of the provisional voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.
They argue that several irregularities have been detected, potentially compromising the fairness of the electoral process.
To address these concerns, the party has called for a meeting with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, labour unions, diplomats, religious groups, and the media.
A letter dated September 19, 2024, and signed by Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, the NDC’s Director of Interparty and Civil Society Relations, formally invited these stakeholders to attend the presentation.
The NDC intends to outline the “serious discrepancies” they have discovered, which they believe could undermine the integrity of the upcoming elections.
The NDC’s concerns first came to light during the voter exhibition exercise, where the party identified several anomalies in the provisional register.
After an unsuccessful meeting with the Electoral Commission, during which the NDC requested a forensic audit of the register and the EC’s IT system—a request that was denied—the party organized nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, to protest the EC’s handling of the voter registration process.
Undeterred by the EC’s refusal, the NDC has sought to build a coalition of stakeholders, including the Ghana Federation of Labour, to apply further pressure on the EC. The upcoming meeting on September 23, 2024, at Labone in Accra, is intended to rally support for the NDC’s call for a forensic audit and restore public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the December 2024 elections.
Speaking on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Yepe Ahunu program with host Nana Dogbe, Abraham Koomson reiterated the GFL’s readiness to attend the meeting, noting that workers have suffered deeply under the NPP’s governance.
He commended the NDC for demonstrating leadership and emphasized the importance of hearing their plans to alleviate the struggles of the working class.
“We are eager to meet with the NDC because they have shown true leadership during these trying times. Workers have suffered greatly under the current government, and we want to know what the NDC has in store for us,” Mr. Koomson said.
In a passionate appeal, Mr. Koomson called on all workers to unite and confront what he described as a “common enemy”—the economic hardships brought about by the NPP’s mismanagement.
He urged workers to stand together and demand better governance, stressing that collective action is key to overcoming their struggles.
The meeting is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political landscape, as the NDC and various stakeholders join forces to ensure that the 2024 elections are conducted fairly, while also addressing the ongoing economic challenges faced by the nation’s workforce.
