Accra, Ghana – The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has called for the removal of the U.S. blockade against Cuba, emphasizing the need for unrestricted travel between the two nations.
He made these remarks during a credentials ceremony at the Presidency, where five newly accredited ambassadors to Ghana presented their letters of accreditation.
In a conversation with H.E. Mr. Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, President Mahama expressed Ghana’s unwavering support for Cuba and urged for the restoration of normal diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.
“We stand by Cuba, that the blockade against Cuba must be lifted. We believe that the blockade should be lifted so that people can travel freely between Cuba and America, and that relations between Cuba and America can be put back on a normal track,” he stated.
The President recalled the optimism that surrounded former U.S. President Barack Obama’s efforts to lift the blockade, lamenting its reimposition and the hardships it continues to impose on the Cuban people.
“We were very hopeful when President Obama started the process of lifting the blockade, but unfortunately it was imposed again, and so we’ll continue to advocate for that to be lifted, because it creates quite a lot of difficulty and suffering for the Cuban people,” he said.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s solidarity with the people of Cuba and expressed his hope that under the tenure of H.E. Mr. Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, the diplomatic ties between Ghana and Cuba would be further strengthened.
“And so we’ll continue to remain in solidarity with the people of Cuba, and it is our hope that during your tenure as ambassador, we’ll be able to lift our relationship to an even higher level,” he added.
