We Were Arrogant in Power, and It Cost Us the Election – NPP’s Awal Mohammed Admits

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Awal Mohammed, has admitted that arrogance and disconnect from the grassroots played a major role in the party’s defeat in the recent general elections.

Awal Mohammed said the NPP failed to listen to the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians and paid the ultimate political price at the polls.

“We admit as a party that we became arrogant in power. We lost touch with the very people who gave us the mandate. That arrogance is one of the key reasons we lost the election,” he confessed.

His comments come amid ongoing internal assessments within the NPP following its electoral loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Awal Mohammed also acknowledged that while the party made significant strides in infrastructure and digital transformation, those achievements were overshadowed by public frustration over economic hardships and perceived insensitivity from government officials.

“It wasn’t that we didn’t achieve things. But our failure was in how we engaged with the people. We forgot that humility and service are what keep a party in power,” he added.

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Awal Mohammed’s remarks are expected to fuel broader conversations within the NPP as it begins the difficult process of rebuilding trust with its support base and preparing for future elections.
