“We took a loan of 20 million cedis to invest into the League – Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, has provided further insight into the financial measures undertaken by his ministry to bolster the ongoing 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season.

Speaking on the initiative on peaceFM, he stated: “We [the Sports ministry] took a loan of 20 million cedis from the bank as investment into the Ghana Premier League. We are working with corporate institutions to pay back this loan as soon as possible.”

The disclosure highlights a strategic move by the ministry to address funding gaps in the country’s top-flight football competition. The GHS 20 million loan is intended to support various operational and developmental aspects of the league, ensuring its smooth execution amid economic challenges facing local clubs.

This intervention follows an earlier commitment by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), which, ahead of the season’s commencement, confirmed that each of the 18 Premier League clubs would receive GHS 1 million as startup capital.

This seed funding—totaling GHS 18 million—was aimed at enabling clubs to cover essential preseason preparations, including player acquisitions, training camps, logistics, and facility upgrades.

With the ministry’s loan supplementing the GFA’s direct support, the combined financial injection reflects a collaborative effort between government and football authorities to sustain the league’s competitiveness and infrastructure.

Hon. Adams emphasized ongoing discussions with corporate entities to secure sponsorships and partnerships, which will be critical in offsetting the loan and reducing reliance on public funds in the future.

The approach underscores a broader vision to professionalize Ghanaian football through sustainable private-sector involvement.
