President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for a more respected and efficient judiciary in Ghana, citing public dissatisfaction with the legal system.
Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), he addressed concerns about misappropriation of public funds and the challenges in prosecuting financial crimes.
“Several surveys asking Ghanaians about their opinion of the Judiciary have not come out positively. I believe it is our duty to ensure we have a judiciary that is respected,” Mahama stated.
He expressed concern over the frequent reports of financial mismanagement in government, mentioning cases involving billions of cedis.
However, he pointed out that dealing with such cases is often complicated due to constitutional procedures and parliamentary processes.
“To deter people from misusing government funds, we must have a fast-track court system that allows for swift prosecution,” he suggested.
President Mahama also addressed perceptions of strained relations between his political party and the legal fraternity.
President John Dramani Mahama reassured the GBA that his party remains open to collaboration with the judiciary and legal professionals.
“There is a perception that we have problems with the legal fraternity. But if you look at the people in our team, like Marrieta [Brew Appiah-Oppong] and others, we are not people who hold animosity towards the Judiciary.
Our doors and hands are open. If there is anything that needs our attention, do not hesitate to bring it forward,” he said.
