We need to Celebrate the Abolishment of the E-Levy

We need to Celebrate the Abolishment of the E-Levy.

The NPP government, in their lack of wisdom, disrespect and disdain for the Ghanaian populace, celebrated the passage of E-levy with an E-levy cake. They told us it was a choice between the E-levy or IMF, but ended up giving us both. It was what drew Oliver Barker Vormawor’s ire on Facebook and caused him to end up in jail on contrived charges of plotting a coup against the government. Today, President Mahama gave his assent and E-levy is no more. It was a campaign promise, and it has been fulfilled.

I am glad to see that the NDC is wise enough to stand by its promise on the Elevy and the betting tax. The government is, however, yet to fulfill its promise on repealing LI 2462, which allows mining in our forest reserves and is hugely contributing to the ecological suicide our environment is currently subjected to.

Instead of repealing the LI as promised, the government is rather seeking to amend it. That’s a lack of wisdom. No sensible government will renege on its campaign promise. No serious leader will allow the rape and defilement of the natural resources sustaining his fellow citizens. It will be criminal and unwise.

Sam George blamed the Galamsey on politicians and said that Akufo Addo has the responsibility and the power to stop it a few months. I hope he is saying same to Mahama. He should convince his party and government to do the right thing now. His party is now in power and Galamsey is still ongoing.

We will take nothing less than a repeal of LI 2462. Amending it will be an insult to the intelligence of the Ghanaian populace–as much as the passage of the E-levy and its celebration with an Elevy cake was. Ghanaians deserve better. Give them what they voted for.

Repeal LI 2462. That’s what you promised. Stand by your words unless you want to antagonise the people who voted you into power.
