TEMA, Ghana, 28 March: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has cautioned that it would be “suicidal” for Ghana to hand political power back to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, if the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) fails to meet expectations, it would be preferable for Ghanaians to consider alternative leadership even from controversial figures like Akwasi Addai Odike rather than return the NPP to office.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, March 28, Mr. Koomson argued that the NPP’s time in government brought significant hardship, particularly for workers, who he said were severely affected by economic challenges and policy decisions.
He cited what he described as anti-worker policies introduced by the NPP while in power, including the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), frozen bonds, and the collapse of private banks, which led to massive job losses.
He stressed that these experiences should serve as a reminder for voters ahead of future elections.
He therefore urged Ghanaians to deny the NPP any opportunity to govern again and instead focus on supporting efforts to rebuild the country.
Mr. Koomson also called on government appointees to align themselves with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama and work diligently to reset the nation’s economy for the benefit of all citizens.
While commending the President’s tireless efforts, he questioned whether Mr. Mahama was not overburdening himself, noting his travels and engagements aimed at reviving the economy. He advised that appointees must step up and share the workload to ease the pressure on the President.
He concluded by urging the Mahama-led administration to intensify its efforts, emphasizing that improved conditions for workers would inspire public confidence, appreciation, and continued support for the government.
