The Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai has officially spoken out following the formal filing of criminal charges against Mr. Solomon Asamoah, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of GIIF. The charges relate to their alleged involvement in financial mismanagement and procurement breaches connected to the Accra Sky Train project.
Addressing the press shortly after the court filing, the Deputy Attorney General emphasized the government’s commitment to recovering all funds allegedly misappropriated through the failed transport initiative.
“I think we are on track when it comes to the recovery,” he stated. “There is no better way of recovering the money than through voluntary recovery. That said, this does not mean one can keep the money and, after serving a jail term, go and enjoy it—because there is an active recovery process underway.”
He revealed that the Attorney General’s office has instituted a robust framework to trace and recover all misappropriated funds. “Whether the recovery is voluntary or not, we will do whatever it takes to recover all the money stolen,” he added.
The Accra Sky Train project, once touted as a flagship solution to the capital’s urban transport challenges, never materialized beyond preliminary agreements, despite the reported disbursement of significant public funds. The current charges reflect the state’s increasing efforts to hold public officials accountable for alleged financial misconduct.
The Deputy Attorney General assured the public that the case will be pursued with transparency and determination as legal proceedings are set to begin in the coming days.
