WAEC Releases Withheld 2024 WASSCE Results Following Court Order

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released all withheld results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), bringing relief to over 10,000 candidates who had been anxiously awaiting their results. This decision ends weeks of uncertainty and growing tension among stakeholders.

The results were initially withheld due to allegations of malpractice, a common issue that often delays the publication of some WASSCE results. WAEC had earlier assured the public that the results would be available by February 28, 2025. However, the delay led to legal challenges and pressure from various quarters, including the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), which threatened nationwide protests if the results were not released promptly.

A court ruling ultimately compelled WAEC to act, ordering the immediate release of the results. Speaking on the matter, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, confirmed that all withheld results, including those involved in legal proceedings, had been made available as of February 28.

“As we promised, we have kept to our word. By the close of February 28, we had uploaded all results of candidates whose results were withheld. The court ordered us to release these results, and we have fully complied. As far as the 2024 WASSCE is concerned, there are no outstanding results,” Mr. Kapi stated during an interview.

He emphasized WAEC’s commitment to transparency and fairness in handling examination processes, noting that the released results accurately reflect candidates’ performance.

While the results were made available late last week, Mr. Kapi noted that WAEC anticipates candidates may start reaching out with queries or concerns during the new week. Nonetheless, he reassured the public that the council remains open to addressing any issues arising from the release.

This development marks a significant victory for candidates and advocacy groups like NUGS, who had consistently demanded accountability from WAEC. It also highlights the importance of balancing the integrity of examinations with the rights of candidates to timely access their results.
