The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 WASSCE provisional results, revealing a significant decline in performance across Ghana’s Senior High Schools. The results show a surge in failure rates in core subjects, with Core Mathematics recording a dramatic increase in F9 failures from 6.10% in 2024 to 26.77% in 2025.
Social Studies: F9 failures jumped from 9.55% to 27.50%, Integrated Science: F9 failures increased from 7.12% to 16.05%, English Language: Failure rate rose from 5.88% to 12.86%.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Midday News, renowned educationist Stephen Yanney Bortsie attributed the decline to WAEC’s tightened security measures, which may have prevented exam malpractices.
He also suggested that the batch of students may have contributed to the decline, citing that a class with brilliant students can boost overall performance.
Stakeholders, including teachers’ unions and parents, are urging the government to implement urgent reforms to address the worsening performance trend.
