Vybz Kartel Wins MOBO Impact Award After Recording In Prison With An Old Laptop

Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel has once again defied the odds, making history by winning the MOBO Impact Award—all while still incarcerated.

The controversial yet celebrated artist, known for his lyrical genius and cultural influence, shocked fans and critics alike after it was revealed that he recorded some of his latest music using nothing more than an old laptop inside prison.

Despite being behind bars since 2011, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has remained one of the most influential figures in global dancehall.

His music continues to dominate airwaves, nightclubs, and streaming platforms, proving that incarceration hasn’t silenced his voice.

Sources close to the artist claim that the laptop—a beat-up, slow device with outdated software—became Kartel’s main tool for recording, editing, and producing tracks.

With limited access to proper studio equipment, he reportedly worked on his vocals in a small space, sometimes using blankets and mattresses to mimic soundproofing.

The MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards, known for honoring Black musical talent from across the world, awarded Kartel the Impact Award, recognizing his ability to shape and influence dancehall despite his circumstances.

“First, I gotta say God is the greatest. Because think about this, (I) got locked up and did 13 years in prison.” Meanwhile, I’m doing 13 years in prison, I’m diagnosed with Graves disease. So I’m fighting to be free and I’m fighting my illness.” I’m fighting to keep my family together; this is my son here, Little Vybz.”
