The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has strongly condemned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) opposition to Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama’s appointment as Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The NDC alleges that the NPP’s actions are a continuation of their seven-year-long campaign to tarnish Dr. Asiama’s reputation.
According to the NDC, the NPP government’s accusations of financial mismanagement against Dr. Asiama were baseless and designed to silence him. Despite subjecting him to lengthy legal battles, the NPP failed to prove any wrongdoing. The NDC maintains that Dr. Asiama’s actions were not unprecedented, as past BoG governors had made similar interventions ¹.
The NDC Volta Region has also accused the NPP of consistently targeting Voltarians in political and economic affairs. They warn that such tactics will no longer be tolerated, stating that “the Volta Region is fully awake and will not tolerate any further injustice against its sons and daughters.”
The party has urged Dr. Asiama to remain focused on his mandate to restore financial stability, despite criticisms from the NPP minority in Parliament. They assure him of their full support, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver results.
In a swipe at the NPP, the NDC stated that “unlike the NPP, the NDC operates with moral values and principles, not unnecessary political persecution.” They also alleged that Dr. Gideon Boako, an NPP member, remained silent on the issue due to his wife’s employment at the BoG, fearing victimization.
