The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is grappling with a staggering GHȼ3.7 billion debt, with a significant portion of GHȼ275 million owed to food suppliers.
This startling disclosure was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed members of the Ghana Armed Forces Council on March 24, at the Ministry of Defence.
She emphasized the far-reaching implications of this debt, stating, “The Ministry of Defence is currently carrying a debt of GHȼ3.7 billion, which includes GHȼ275 million owed to food suppliers.”
She further elucidated that this debt encompasses various obligations, including payments for food supplies, equipment, repairs, and machinery.
In acknowledging the broader economic difficulties facing the country, Veep Professor Opoku-Agyemang reassured the public of her commitment to collaborating with the council members to ensure the armed forces remain well-equipped and capable of effectively addressing Ghana’s security needs.
“We are fully committed to ensuring that, despite these challenges, the armed forces remain well-equipped and capable of securing the nation,” she assured.
