Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Celebrates Ghana–China Ties at 2026 Chinese Spring Festival.

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed the strength of Ghana–China relations and called for deeper, transparent cooperation as she joined the 2026 Chinese Spring Festival celebrations.
Delivering a keynote address at the event, the Vice President conveyed greetings from President John Dramani Mahama and described the Spring Festival as a significant moment of renewal, hope, unity and prosperity.
She noted that Ghana’s participation in the celebration reflects the long-standing friendship, trust and cooperation between the peoples of Ghana and China.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the contributions of Sunon Asogli Power, one of Ghana’s earliest independent power producers, to the country’s energy sector. She said that for nearly two decades the company has supplied a substantial share of electricity to the national grid, with power purchased by the Electricity Company of Ghana, helping to stabilize the system during periods of stress.
According to her, during challenging moments in the power sector, Sunon Asogli demonstrated commitment by agreeing to concessions, including waivers on idle capacity charges and discounts on legacy arrears. These measures, she noted, helped ease financial pressures within the sector, supported continuity of electricity supply and contributed to broader economic activity.
The Vice President emphasized that development is driven not only by infrastructure and investments but also by people-to-people connections, cultural exchange and mutual respect.
She reminded guests that diplomatic relations between Ghana and China were established in 1960 and have since grown into a multifaceted partnership spanning education, trade, industry and technical cooperation.
She said the historical ties between the two countries place a responsibility on both sides to build partnerships grounded in clarity of purpose, accountability and shared benefits.
Ghana, she stressed, remains committed to strengthening cooperation that is transparent, fair and aligned with national development priorities, particularly in areas that support industrial growth, energy security and long-term economic resilience.
Reflecting on the symbolism of the Spring Festival, Professor Opoku-Agyemang described it as a time for renewal and reflection, urging stakeholders to focus on results-driven collaboration in the year ahead.
She expressed confidence in Ghana’s development direction and welcomed partnerships that respect the country’s priorities.
