Upper West Police Secure 10-Year Jail Term for Man Over Defilement of 7-Year-Old Boy

The Upper West Regional Police Command, through its Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), has secured the conviction and sentencing of 42-year-old Elyasu Kunateh for the defilement of a seven-year-old boy in Wa.

According to the Police, Kunateh was arrested on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following a report lodged by the victim’s mother. The incident was reported to have occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Following the complaint, the Police immediately commenced investigations and referred the victim for medical examination and psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into custody.

After a full trial, His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found Kunateh guilty of the offence on Thursday, July 23, 2026, and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and pursuing all reported cases of child abuse, sexual violence and gender-based violence.

The Command has also urged parents, guardians, caregivers and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police facility to enable immediate action.
