British police have charged actor and comedian Russell Brand with rape and multiple assaults spanning from 1999 to 2005, according to a police statement issued on Friday.
Brand, 50, known both for his previous career as one of Britain’s most prominent comedians and broadcasters and more recently as an internet social commentator, faces charges including one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault—all relating to four separate women.
The statement noted that the Metropolitan Police’s investigation is ongoing, and detectives are urging anyone who has been affected by these events or who has any information to come forward.
This development follows 2023 reports from The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s documentary series “Dispatches,” which detailed accusations by four women alleging that Brand committed sexual assaults, including rape, between 2006 and 2013. Brand has consistently maintained that all his sexual encounters were consensual.
