Gospel minister and renowned worship leader Nathaniel Bassey has sparked reflection on the true meaning of honour, stressing that genuine respect must come from the heart and not merely from outward gestures.
According to Bassey, people may publicly honour someone through respectful words, kneeling, curtsying and celebrating them, while secretly harbouring negative feelings towards that same person.
He explained that the true nature of people’s relationships is often revealed when positions of power and influence are lost. Using former political officeholders as an example, Bassey noted that some people experience a sudden change in the attention and respect they receive after leaving office.
“The day your tenure finishes, you will know people. Once you leave the office, the phone calls will cease, all the attention will cease,” he said.
Bassey argued that when people’s admiration disappears immediately after someone loses a position of influence, it may suggest that the respect was directed more towards the office than the individual.
Referencing Matthew 15:8, he emphasized that outward expressions of honour are meaningless if they are not backed by a sincere heart.
“True honour begins from the heart. True honour comes from the heart,” Bassey concluded, encouraging people to pursue genuine respect and honour rather than mere public displays.
His message has resonated as a reminder that real honour is not measured by what people say or do in public, but by what they truly carry in their hearts.
